Hello all,
It's that time to think about letting off some steam by smacking your friends and co-performers for the entertainment of others. To this end, I am announcing the Auditions for live steel and combative rehearsals to start shortly afterwards.

We are currently planning on continuing the successful format from past years, using wooden wasters and clay pigeons to add a level of explosive energy to our performance and integrating nicely with the Tournament nature of this year's MSL theme.

There are limited amounts of armour available, so we ask that everyone provide their own kit. Since this is a show, we do insist that the armour either be visually appropriate to this year's performance or be considered "Low Profile", as in the ability to wear it comfortably under the rest of your costume. The minimum safety requirements for the show are currently as follows (most SCA or MSR approved equipment will suffice):

• Helmet
• Neck (rigid throat and cervical spine) and shoulder (rotator cuff)protection.
• Elbows these can be as minimalistic as Courters (floating elbow copps) or complete arm cannons. Low profile Rigid pads are available, but please remember that your appearance will still have to be one of an armoured combatant.
• Hands (including fingers)
• Torso (Ribs, kidney and spine), although this does not necessarily need to be rigid protection, a thick gambeson
• Cup or groin protection—Let's face it guys, yes they are uncomfortable, but getting hit there with a Waster is worse.

All equipment must be inspected by the directors and worn without exception during the performances.

What to expect:
Your gear will be inspected, then you will be inspected. For those who have participated in other combative arts, this will be the equivalent of a "Qual Bout".
You will be judged on

• Safety—we don't have the cast to replace participants for every show due to injuries.
• Skill—The safest thing to do is run away, however, that is also one of the worst for the show. We are not looking for "Master Swordsmen", however, the audience has to believe that you are a trained combative.
• Showmanship—Yes this is a "Un-Choreographed" show, however, it is still a show. Small, quick motions may "beat" your "opponant", however, you will also succeed in putting the audience to sleep.
• Character Appropriateness—This is a subjective decision that is completely within the scope of the directors for this show as well as for the Main Story line. Please understand that any decision in this category does not necessarily reflect your abilities as a martial artist or combatant. Jackie Chan is an incredible theatrical combatant, but I would not cast him as a young King Arthur.

One last but very critical thought; please remember that this is a show. The premise of which is tournament style combat, however, without an audience, we are only amusing ourselves. Please remember this when at all times when performing, whether it is auditions, rehearsals, or the show itself. Just because you win the bout, does not mean you entertained the audience.
